Why don't we make things here any more?

Industrial restructuring and cheap overseas labour and imports have, in recent years, led to the loss of a huge number of skilled jobs in craft and manufacturing here in the UK. The recent cuts announced in the steel industry are just the latest in a succession of closures that will affect our capacity to make things in this country for many years to come.

The effect of all this is that communities are changed irreparably and that valuable specialist skills, often handed down over the generations, are sometimes lost forever, so I believe it's vital we support those who are designing, making and manufacturing things locally.

It's a passion that's shared by Shinola, who recently launched the Makers Monday website to encourage us to support local makers and businesses in the towns and communities in which we live.
