Water tower vases

Water tower vases by Michael Breschi

Industry Porcelain is a collection of vases by Michael Breschi.

Michael studied Industrial Design at Florence University and founded his own studio Gentle Giants in 2012, working on a diverse range of projects exploring the fluid borders between art and design.

The vases are a tribute to the renowned work of Bernd and Hilla Becher, an artist couple (Bernd was a painter and draftsman and Hilla trained as a photographer), who over a period of thirty odd years from the 1950s to the 1980s photographed water towers and other industrial structures. Initially the examples they documented were mainly in their native Germany but the couple went on to travel throughout France, Holland, the UK and the US in search of them.

The Becher's single minded mission to obsessively document these commonplace but striking examples of industrial architecture in a cool and objective way resulted in their seminal book, Watertowers. A much loved copy of the book sits on a bookshelf in my office and was one of the original inspirations behind our Obsessionistas website.
