Store Spotlight | Dinosaur Designs
Australian jewellery and homeware brand Dinosaur Designs is set to land in the UK this summer when the company opens its first UK store in the Ham Yard urban village redevelopment in the heart of Soho. Revolving around a tree filled garden that will include personally selected retailers and a restaurant and bar alongside the Kit Kemp designed hotel, Ham Yard will be Firmdale Hotels' eighth London property.
"We're thrilled to have been invited to open up a store in London by Firmdale Hotels" says Dinosaur Designs Creative Director Louise Olsen. "London has emerged as a design hub over the last several years, so the time and location were right," adds her partner Stephen Ormandy.
A company with a strong artisan aesthetic - all the objects they produce are designed in house and then handmade in their Sydney studio - Dinosaur Designs was established back in 1985 and their jewellery and homeware products are now stocked in stores and galleries around the world. In 1989, Olsen and Ormandy's work was featured in an exhibition at the V&A entitled 'Australia and the art of the dress' and their designs were subsequently picked up by Liberty and Harvey Nichols.
The latest collections, created from materials including resin, silver and brass, reference tribal influences and shapes, colours and patterns derived from geology and the natural world. With a style that incorporates sculptural forms, painterly surface patterns and strong use of colour, these are distinctive pieces that make a fresh, contemporary statement.
