Postcard from... Bryncyn

Holidaying in the UK is so much less trouble. It's just easier to get to your destination and there is no tiresome queuing at airports or getting stuck on cross channel ferries. When you just want to be there and the journey isn’t an adventure, pack the car up, drive and half a day later…. ahhhh, relax.

In search of a place to get away from it all, this summer we headed to Bryncyn, a unique and surprising property in deepest Carmarthenshire that sits high up on a hill with views of the surrounding countryside to die for. A place to unwind, to enjoy a digital detox, read a book, eat well, doodle some ideas in a sketchbook and walk the dog.

We've previously visited Dorian Bowen’s other more traditional Welsh House properties and so were keen to discover the more contemporary style that Bryncyn offers. For those who like their architectural styles to co-exist alongside each other, rather than be distinct, Dorian has created a unique place to stay. At Bryncyn, ruralism meets minimalism in the form of a freshly lime washed traditional Welsh cottage where a secret world awaits. Stepping through the front door reveals a welcoming interior of paired back contemporary local vernacular with a generous sized bedroom above, but flip the latch on the side door and you are wowed by a kitchen-diner of shuttered pale concrete walls, stretching out to a sheltered outdoor space with a wild pond and a sunken timber hot tub tucked into a side alcove.

We certainly didn’t need to max out on the hot tub’s water temperature though, as oh did the sun shine! Lounging about in the tranquil surroundings while enjoying a week of uninterrupted Mediterranean style hot weather was just what we needed to recharge the batteries.

Daily walks with Albert whippet in and around the locality confirmed what a great holiday destination this is. If you feel inclined to venture further afield then a trip to Saundersfoot beach to sample the delicious food on offer at the recently opened Coast restaurant followed by a dip in the sea is a day out that comes highly recommended.

Thanks to Dorian for a great stay.
