A bedroom makeover & my 5 must-have beauty products
Living in a relatively small house where storage is in short supply, a dressing table always felt like a luxury we couldn't really accommodate in our current bedroom.
With storage our main consideration, when we originally decorated and furnished the room we wanted to incorporate as much shelf and drawer space as possible, fitting built in wardrobes and cupboards along the walls on either side of the bed and positioning a large chest of drawers on the only remaining wall. As a result, I'd resigned myself to the fact that having a dressing table just wasn't really an option. But in truth, I've never really been happy with the room layout, and it always felt like a bit of a compromise.
So when Habitat got in touch recently and asked if I'd like to get involved in their current collaboration with Birchbox we decided to ditch the old chest of drawers and see how things worked out with their lovely new Emil dressing table instead.
And what a joy it's been to make the switch! Finally I have somewhere to sit and spread things out while I'm styling my hair and putting on my make up, instead of having to compete with my husband for bathroom space every time we get ready to go out together. Thanks to its slender, elegant design and oversized mirror it has also opened up the room and made it feel much bigger.
To celebrate the design's launch, Habitat have partnered with monthly beauty and lifestyle subscription service Birchbox. Since Spring is traditionally a time of renewal, renovation and refreshment, the theme for the collaboration 'Do Try This At Home' fittingly celebrates makeovers of all types - from updating your daily beauty regime to reorganising or redecorating your home.
There are so many beauty products out there that it can be hard to know which ones to choose, so the Birchbox concept is designed to allow you to test out a box of different samples from leading brands each month. If you discover something you particularly like you can then choose to buy the full size product. The March box, exclusively produced as part of the Habitat Birchbox collaboration is available here (and there's a special reader discount code at the end of this post if you're interested).
I've been very spoilt this month as Birchbox kindly sent me a selection of my favourite beauty products (and a few new ones to try out). Here's what I chose:
The smell of this alone is enough to justify treating yourself - a blend of botanical oils including geranium and lavender with hints of spicy vanilla, peppermint and eucalyptus. I mean seriously could they have crammed any more of my favourite scents into one product? It's incredibly light and easily absorbed too.
My bathroom cupboard is full of unused hand and body lotions, but this is one that definitely won't be around for long.
My first thought upon applying this was how aptly named it is. It really does feel as if my skin is being absolved of the many sins I have inflicted on it. My skin tends to be fairly dry during the winter months but just a tiny amount of this immediately hydrates it. It absorbs quickly and my face instantly feels firmer and beautifully supple. It is expensive, so you'll want to use it sparingly, but in my view it's worth every penny.
This one's worthy of five stars. My usual cheaper everyday moisturiser doesn't even begin to compare with it. It's unisex and certified organic too.
I've long been a fan of the Laura Mercier range and probably have more of their products in my make up bag than any other brand. My skin is prone to Rosacea and so I use this on any areas where I need a little extra coverage while keeping the rest of my face more lightly made up. It's long lasting and offers complete coverage. If I'm out and about and travelling light I just pop this and a lipstick in my bag for quick touch ups throughout day.
Yes, this really is like applying a soufflé to your face. My skin feels dewy, soft, revived and firmer. It's great for more mature skin as it seems to instantly reinject some of the plumpness your skin loses as it ages.
This smells like the best dessert you've ever had. It quickly works up into a luxurious creamy lather that leaves your skin feeling soft, nourished and deliciously scented.
An indulgent way to start the day.
