Own the weekend

Today I’m very happy to be able to share news of an exciting new partnership I’m embarking upon. Design Hunter is teaming up with Samsung Home Appliances and over the next few months I will be working with them as a brand ambassador.

My core philosophy here on Design Hunter has always been about living with less but buying better. I always choose the best design I can afford because I truly believe that a living environment in which we are surrounded by thoughtfully designed objects can enhance our daily lives.

Home appliances are an integral part of this. Technology now underpins most aspects of our busy, modern lives and nowhere are we more dependent on it than in the kitchen, where we rely upon it for everything from making a simple cup of tea, to the storing and preparation of food, and then for cleaning up afterwards. It has become so seamlessly integrated into our lives that we often forget how reliant on it we actually are.

It’s easy to forget that not so long ago our grandmothers would spend a large part of their day engaged in household chores that home appliances now perform for us effortlessly. We take this for granted most of the time.

At the same time, smartphones and wi-fi have become almost as important to us as running water. I could no more survive without my phone than I could without a cooker or a washing machine. Samsung is joining all of these things together, developing a range of smart products that work together to make everyday life as efficient as possible, so that we can spend more time doing the things that are really important to us. My Samsung washing machine for example has an app that enables me to monitor and control it remotely from my smartphone wherever I am, inside or even outside the home.

I’m proud to be partnering with Samsung Home Appliances because I share their belief that innovative technology beautifully designed can change our lives for the better - enhancing our living environment, enabling us to carry out time-consuming chores like cleaning and laundry more efficiently, enabling us to make healthier choices about what we eat, encouraging us to discover more pleasure in cooking for our friends and family, and helping us to ‘own the weekend’. I’m really looking forward to sharing more of my thoughts on all of this over the coming months.

As part of this partnership I’ll be developing new lifestyle stories and sharing snapshots from my own home. Expect to see the occasional food post too. My core focus in all of this however will continue to be on good design, and how the objects we live with can help us create a home that is inviting, restful and a place of sanctuary.

This weekend was the August Bank Holiday here in the UK, traditionally the last long weekend of the summer before we all head back to work. I’ve just returned from a week long camping trip in Scotland – no wi-fi, no washing machine, no dishwasher – so I was happy to spend the weekend just relaxing and unwinding at home. After I’d loaded up the washing machine I headed out to our local wood to walk the dog, returning with an impressive haul of freshly picked blackberries. My friend Nicolette came over and we spent the afternoon catching up over a baking session. There are many reasons to make time for catching up with friends, but in my experience cake is always a good excuse if one is needed – in this case both the baking and the eating of it!

One of life’s simplest pleasures surely.
