Mixing old & new with an Oriental twist
It's around about this time each year that all the new season lookbooks start popping through my letterbox and landing in my inbox. Today I'm exploring the new AW16 collection from OKA, and with three different inspirational looks and hundreds of new pieces there is a lot to discover.
Among the three new looks at OKA is Palazzo Nuovo - an original Venetian palace transformed into a 21st century home by Annabel Astor - and The Berkshire Mahal, in which Lucinda Waterhouse creates a traditional English country home with Indian elements, but it's this light-filled open plan apartment designed by Sue Jones that I'm most drawn to.
Sue has created an inviting space that balances old and new with an oriental twist. Natural textures like leather, jute and goat hair combine with a soft neutral colour scheme to set the tone in the living room, where relaxed seating is arranged around an oversized leather and brass ottoman. This works as a coffee table but also doubles up to provide occasional extra seating. Although the overall effect is relaxed, each object has been carefully chosen and arranged.
The apartment has an open plan living and dining area, so in contrast to the lighter tones in the living room Sue has introduced darker woods in the dining area to define it as a separate space. I particularly love the black wooden Murciana chairs. Upholstered in goat hair these are reminiscent of one of my favourite designs, the Hans Wegner wishbone chair - itself inspired by a traditional Chinese design. As well as looking great grouped around the rustic solid oak dining table they could also be used alone at a desk or dressing table.
The Zamindar four poster bed takes centre stage in the bedroom. Here it's been swathed in gold silk for a colourful and opulent look, but if you prefer something a little more pared back and minimal it offers more than enough style stripped back to its natural linen finish.
One of the stand out pieces in the collection for me is this Bauhaus inspired Dessau desk. Constructed on a dark metal frame with a weathered oak veneer it has built in shelves and cubbyholes for all your files and office essentials.
