10 of the best... lighting buys for under £100
We invested in several pieces of designer lighting for our old house but many of them just don’t really work in our new home and I’ve ended up consigning a few of them to ebay. When you are renovating an entire house it’s surprising how many pieces of lighting you actually need. With each room typically needing multiple different light sources - ceiling spotlights, pendant lights and wall lights as well as floor and table lamps - costs can quickly add up.
Most of our budget is committed to the kitchen extension at the moment so rather than buying expensive lighting I’ve been exploring more budget friendly options, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised with what I’ve discovered.
Until quite recently if you were looking for lighting your options were either high street buys, which were cheap but often dull and uninspiring, or high end design classics with a hefty price tag. Over the past few years things have changed though, and as the market has shifted away from lighting showrooms towards the online space, newer online retailers with more trend led offerings have appeared and designers and manufacturers have also been able to sell their products direct to the customer much more easily, cutting out the middle man and so reducing costs.
As a result there are now many more well designed pieces available at an affordable price point. Here are 10 that come in at under £100.
Matte black industrial style pendant light
I can think of no end of places where the simple styling of this industrial style pendant would fit right in. Personally I’d hang it over a huge marble kitchen island (if I had one obviously), but it would work just as well in an office or workplace setting, or above a dining table.
Oak touch lamp by Tala
Tala are a young British brand who offer the latest in energy efficient LED technology without compromising on aesthetic design. This touch operated table lamp is available in either an oak or walnut finish.
House by John Lewis Brandon Floor lamp
When I see products at this price my first reaction is to ask how they do it. I mean when you consider everything that goes into designing, manufacturing and retailing a light it seems wrong right? But if you’re after a stylish minimalist floor lamp on a tight budget this definitely fits the bill.
Lightyears by Republic of Fritz Hansen Night Owl table lamp
Soft, organic and sculptural, this one wouldn’t normally come in at under £100 but it’s currently on sale with a generous discount at 40% off.
