It's fair to say I am a pretty methodical shopper. I rarely buy on a whim. Instead, fairly early on each season I compile a wishlist and then, aside from the odd essential and usually well-considered purchase, I sit patiently and wait for the sales to arrive.

And when they do, the first thing I do is check out all the 'investment purchases' that have long been on my wish list that I wouldn't normally be able to afford - this season it's a Georg Nelson pendant light from Skandium, still not exactly cheap but enticingly reduced from £350 to £297.50. Some new bed linen with an indulgently high thread count is also up there on my list.

Many of the major homeware retailers have already launched their sales so yesterday I took a look around to see what I could find. Here's my pick of 20 of the best deals I came up with - all are heavily discounted, many by 50% or more.

Kolarbyn: Wild Sweden

The strapline 'Sweden's most primitive hotel' may not immediately ingratiate potential holiday makers with the eco-lodge Kolarbyn but there's much to be said for shunning modern life in favour of a more primitive existence. The collection of charcoal burner's huts in the Swedish forest takes you right back to basics with no electricity or even running water, just the trees, the lake and the quiet.

Design Hunter loves...
