House on the River: A Black Cedar Clad Retreat Embracing Nature and Heritage
This stunning black cedar house designed by Atelier Échelle in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Canada isn’t just a beautiful structure; it’s a space rooted in history, thoughtfully crafted on land that has been part of the client’s family for generations. With its striking arrangement of five distinct pitched roofs and light-filled interiors, the house is a warm, open home that invites family and friends to gather comfortably. The design even preserves elements of the original 1970s prefabricated bungalow, transforming the footprint into a winter garden and studio that pays homage to a rich family history of passionate gardeners.
As you approach the home, the collection of pitched roofs gives it the charming appearance of a quaint village. But step inside and you’re greeted with an expansive, light-filled interior that feels both grand and inviting. The entry hall frames a breathtaking view of the river in the distance, leading you past a cosy guest wing and lounge into the heart of the home.
This central living space is the true hub of the house, containing the kitchen, dining area, and living room. Oversized windows offer panoramic views of the landscape outside, seamlessly blending the indoor and outdoor spaces.
The kitchen is a chef’s dream, with a large pantry hidden away to handle the messy prep work, leaving the open concept kitchen to be a warm and welcoming gathering spot. Oak cabinetry is accented by the rich gold veining and soft green hues of the Taj Mahal countertops and backsplash.
Adjacent to the kitchen is a comfortable dining and living area anchored by a fireplace. An exterior kitchen, dining and pool area just beyond make this the perfect spot to entertain guests year-round as the seasons change.
Tucked away from the main living areas is the luxurious primary suite. Thick white oak walls create a cozy, enveloping feel, with a large window framing the stunning river view. The primary bathroom is a spa-like oasis, featuring a freestanding soaking tub, double vanity, and large shower. Calming tones of white, gray, and wood create a soothing, serene atmosphere.
The home’s guest wing offers comfortable accommodations for visiting friends and family, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms finished with handmade ceramic tiles, brass accents, and charming window seats overlooking the landscape.
Throughout the home, natural materials like white oak, stone, and textured shou sugi ban cedar create a warm, grounded aesthetic that seamlessly connects the interior to the picturesque riverfront setting. It’s a true getaway that celebrates the beauty of its surroundings while providing ample space for the owners to host loved ones and enjoy the peaceful retreat.
