Why Texture Matters More Than You Think in Modern Interiors

Minimalist living room with canvas wall art

Most rooms that go wrong don’t go wrong with colour.

The colour is often fine (mostly). Somebody spent a wet Sunday with paint testers and decided on a grey that does the job. The sofa was sensible-ish. The lighting got some thought near the end. What’s missing is anything for the hand or the eye to hold on to.

It all looks fine in a photo, but in reality, it feels like a flat, monotonous plane. Somebody lives in it and experiences the two-dimensional staleness, apologising to guests who also have to experience it.

The Stuff Renters Already Know

People who can’t touch their own walls work this out fast. The floor is landlord-bland. The walls are landlord-beige. Kitchen units in that wipe-clean, glossy grey nobody with any taste would’ve chosen. And then there’s a soul-binding clause about never drilling so much as a single hole. At this point, the annual springtime ant infestation has more say than you do, and they’re not even paying rent.

So the only choice left is whatever gets laid on top, and renters get good at it out of necessity. Even the stick-on stuff helps more than it ought to. Peel-and-stick cork on one wall. Those fake-tile sheets behind the hob. Cheap and temporary, and still a step up from another bare plane.

Light Is Half of It

A surface only has texture when something skims across it at an angle.

One bulb dead centre in the ceiling, and the cleverest lime plaster in London goes dead and lifeless. drop a lamp to hip height with a warm bulb, and the same wall shows every ripple in the grain. The texture was sitting there the whole time. The light just wasn’t reaching it.

North-facing rooms have it worst. All that even grey daylight coming in flat, not a shadow anywhere, so the materials in them have to work twice as hard, and the lamps have to cover for a sun that never really shows up.

This is the part that gets skipped in every before-and-after going, because lamps are dull to shop for, and the ceiling fitting came free with the flat.

Where a Picture Stops Being a Picture

So. Walls.

People lavish attention on cushions and rugs and then leave the largest surface in the room as a blank rectangle. Or they hang a print behind glass that fires the ceiling light back at head height.

A wall canvas has a weave that catches light at an angle rather than reflecting it. Close up, there’s a roughness to it, the grain of the fabric beneath the ink.

Mixing Without Making a Jumble Sale

More texture sounds like more clutter, doesn’t it? Like a room inspired by a charity shop window. It doesn’t have to.

The difference is in feel. Concrete floor with something shaggy thrown over it. A stained-glass Tiffany-style lamp next to soft linen. The contrast lies in the touch, so a room can stay almost bare and still feel like something is happening.

So much of it costs nothing. A wooden chopping board left out on the worktop, or a stack of battered paperbacks nobody’s even read, or a bowl of lemons, being simple, yellow ovals by the window.

A Note on the Bouclé Everything

Around 2021, every second sofa in the country went bouclé.

those little curled loops, cream, all at once, in living rooms all over Instagram. The loops throw a whole field of tiny shadows, so even an all-white room stops feeling quite so unlived-in. Then the cheap versions landed. loops printed onto the fabric.

Velvet has gone the same way, for what it’s worth. The proper velvety stuff shifts colour, and the whole surface seems to move when somebody walks past it. The budget version pills into little bobbles by spring, and the sofa looks ready to retire before the cushions have even softened. However, that is texture, admittedly.

So, Texture

A rug with some grab, a lamp that feels low, or one canvas on the wall that’s stood empty since the moving boxes went up into the attic. And when the clocks change, the summer cottons go away, and the woollen throws come out to play, and the same space feels like a different room by December.
