Paint it black?
Let’s start the week off with a peek at this beautiful Swedish home currently for sale over at Fantastic Frank.
There is so much to love about this home – the herringbone oak flooring or the wood panelling in the dining room for instance.
I’ve been thinking of painting the rather tired looking wooden floorboards in my office, and after admiring the beautiful staircase below, I’m tempted to take the plunge and go for a really dark shade of grey, blue or black. We used Railings on our garden wall recently and loved it.
Have you ever used a dark shade like this for the floorboards in your home? If so I’d love to hear your recommendations. Please do feel free to pitch in below with your thoughts or experiences.
I’m currently staining Tasmanian Oak floorboards black, using "ferrous acetate" which is simply vinegar in which some old rusty nails or some steel wool has been soaked. Heaps of info to be found on the Net, but there’s nothing to it really. Works best on wood with high tannin content, ie oak, walnut, cherry, etc. On pine the effect can be deepened by a prior application of tea (contains tannin). It’s been fun to experiment. The finish is wickedly good (not to mention costing almost nothing and being ecologically innocent). Thank you for your splendid site and for giving me a sub.
Thanks so much for your great advice on this Linda. I’m going to try this out. I’d never really considered creating my own wood stain before but after a quick google search of the effects you can create I’m excited to give it a go.
Thank you!
