Getting Ready for Autumn: Simple Changes to Make Your Home Feel Warm and Inviting
There’s something inherently special about autumn – a season that invites us to slow down, reflect, and cocoon ourselves in spaces that feel warm, inviting, and deeply personal. For me, preparing my home for autumn is less about following trends and more about creating an environment that resonates with the season’s introspective mood.
This year, I’m approaching my autumn refresh with a mindful eye. It’s not about buying new things for the sake of it, but rather about thoughtfully curating my space to reflect the changing season. I start by reassessing what I already have, looking at familiar pieces with fresh eyes. That vintage armchair I picked up on ebay last year? With the addition of a soft, mohair throw in a rich autumnal hue, it becomes the perfect spot for autumn reading sessions.
In the living room, I’m embracing a palette inspired by my view of the garden from the large picture window. Deep earthy greens, and soft, warm beige come together to create a cosy backdrop for everyday living. I’ve swapped out my summer linen curtains for heavier velvet drapes – they add instant warmth and help to insulate against the cooler temperatures.
Texture plays a crucial role in my autumn scheme. I love layering different materials to create depth and interest. A chunky wool rug underfoot, linen cushions on the sofa, and a tactile ceramic vase on the coffee table. This sensory richness is what makes a home feel truly lived-in and loved.
In the kitchen, I’ve brought in pumpkins and gourds from my allotment and displayed them on the window sill. Their muted tones and organic shapes make for a beautiful, ever-changing still life. I’ve also picked dahlias from my cutting patch – they serve as a reminder of summer’s bounty as we move into the cooler months.
The bedroom becomes a sanctuary at this time of year. I’ve swapped out the crisp white cotton for linen bedding in a deep, inky blue – it feels both cocooning and elegant. And the reading lamps on either side of the bed cast a warm, golden glow that’s perfect for those long evenings curled up with a book.
Getting ready for autumn: my 5 top tips
As we transition into this new season, here are my top 5 tips for creating a home that embraces autumn’s unique charm:
- Embrace natural materials: Incorporate wood, stone, and organic textiles to bring a sense of the outdoors in. These materials add warmth and connect your space to the changing landscape outside.
- Layer lighting: Create a cosy atmosphere with multiple light sources. Table lamps, floor lamps, and candles all contribute to a warm, inviting glow as the days grow shorter.
- Introduce seasonal scents: Whether through natural elements like pine cones and dried herbs, or your favourite candles, scent can powerfully evoke the essence of autumn.
- Curate a autumn-inspired colour palette: Look to nature for inspiration. Deep greens, rich browns, and muted oranges can all add depth and warmth to your space.
- Create cosy corners: Designate areas in your home for relaxation and reflection. A comfortable chair, a soft throw, and good lighting can transform any corner into a seasonal retreat.
Embrace the imperfections, the handmade, and the personal – these are the elements that make a house truly feel like home.
