How we can achieve a shift towards a more circular design process?

It’s a question that has been one of the most frequently discussed issues within the interiors industry recently.

It’s easy to understand why brands wanting to adopt a more sustainable approach might feel overwhelmed. Processes and supply chains can be complex. Offering designs that are 100% sustainable may seem currently unrealistic or not commercially viable for many businesses, but change will be driven by us as consumers collectively encouraging and rewarding brands that choose to take small steps to work towards reducing their impact on the environment as a long term goal.

Many leading fashion brands have put sustainability at the forefront of their collections over the past few seasons, with increasing use of fabrics like lyocell and recycled cashmere. While trends in interiors typically follow a little way behind the fashion industry, it’s good to see an increasing number of brands in the interiors sector now addressing this too.

With their new Sustainable Collection Kirkby Design have put sustainability at the forefront of their design and development process, creating a series of contemporary interior textiles made from 100% sustainably sourced and/or recycled materials. Each fabric is also fully recyclable, so it can eventually go on to be repurposed at the end of its useful life.

We sometimes assume that sustainable design involves a degree of compromise in terms of quality or aesthetic, but as this collection demonstrates, this isn’t necessarily the case. And as part of their commitment to reducing impact on the environment for every metre of fabric sold Kirkby Design will also be dontating a percentage of proceeds to two charitable organisations they are partnering with – the Marine Conservation Society and Trees for Life.

Let’s hope more brands continue to adopt this approach in the future.
