The best candles for autumn 2023
Explore the cosy warmth of the changing season with our pick of the best candles for autumn.
Scented candles are among my favourite things to both give and receive as gifts. Although I use them all year round, I especially love them during the darker winter months when they can really set the scene for the evening, making the home feel warm, cosy and inviting.
Lighting a candle at that late afternoon moment when the light starts to fade is something of an autumn ritual for me, but I also love to use different scents to define the mood for different activities around the home at other times during the day – a morning in the office, afternoon tea with friends, or a relaxing bath and pamper session.
Here are a few that I’ve tried, tested and love. I’ve compiled similar posts rounding up my favourite scented candles in previous years, but here is my newly updated list for autumn 2023 including recent discoveries alongside some of my old favourites.

Oak Moss scented candle – Arket
Arket’s Oakmoss range evokes the fresh woodland scent of bark and green foliage. I use the hand wash and body wash from the same collection too.
Best for… those who like earthy, outdoorsy scents and appreciate simple, minimalist packaging.

Autumn candle – The White Company
The White Company’s Autumn candle will infuse your home with the sweet, fresh aroma of autumn fruits. The soft warm blend of pear, quince and apricot (with a hint of musk and amber) has me reaching for my cookbooks to dig out recipes for poached pears and quince jelly.
Best for… an early evening soak in the bath after a long country walk crunching through leaves.

Glowing Embers candle – Jo Malone
This warm, comforting candle from the Jo Malone Townhouse collection is presented in a tactile ceramic jar with an elegant decorative lid.
Best for… enjoying at dusk as you curl up in front of the fire.

Verveine 32 – Le Labo
Le Labo’s Verveine 32 has a zesty, herbal scent that is simultaneously both refreshing and soothing. I am a huge fan of the Le Labo product range and this is one of my favourites at any time of the year.
Best for… creating a calming, uplifting ambience – I have this one on my desk in my office.

Thé Russe No. 75 – Le Labo
One of the most beautifully presented candles I own and always finding it’s way into my shoots as a styling prop.
Best for… making a statement on your coffee table (but the fragrance is lovely too).

Catene candle – Fornasetti
Fornasetti’s signature Otto fragrance has a lovely leathery, woody fragrance – quite masculine and perfect for the cold, darker months. The most expensive option featured on this list, but the beautiful Fornasetti jar is a covetable object in its own right. Plus the candle quality is among the best I’ve come across. It’s slow burning, richly scented and lasts for ages.
Best for… creating a luxurious, sophisticated mood when inviting friends over for drinks.
