Feather and Black Mattress Review: Features, Pros and Cons for 2024
A restful night’s sleep is essential, yet many of us still struggle to get the quality shut-eye we desperately need. Feather and Black aims to change that with their new luxury mattress collection, designed to have you sleeping soundly and waking refreshed.
The collection includes a range of different options – from soft and springy mattresses to those providing a firmer level of support, but in this Feather and Black mattress review we’ll be considering the Bronte mattress.
The Bronte features some of the smallest pocket springs on the market and is designed to respond to individual movements so that you don’t disturb your sleeping partner. It also offers advanced lumbar support, which may be something to consider if you suffer from back pain or discomfort.
We’ll take an in-depth look at its high quality materials and construction, examine its sustainability claims, and assess the overall comfort levels we experienced during testing.

Who makes Feather and Black mattresses
Feather and Black’s luxury and sustainable mattresses are handmade by Harrison Spinks in Yorkshire, with a focus on quality craftsmanship. Each design in the collection is made with the finest materials, all of which are sourced here in the UK. They include sumptuous natural fillers such as wool and home-grown hemp, which is renowned for its temperature-regulating and naturally fire-retardant properties.
Handmade in the UK
Firstly, each mattress is handcrafted to order, so you get to enjoy a truly luxurious sleep experience that is tailor-made for you. You can choose either firm or medium tension, with each mattress available as either a single or dual tension design. Zip and link options are also available.
Dual tension mattresses are a popular choice for couples who have different body types or sleeping positions, as they allow each person to find the level of support they need without compromising on the overall comfort of the bed. They can also be useful for people who suffer from back pain, as the different levels of firmness can provide targeted support where it is needed most.

The construction
The Bronte boasts a sumptuous construction that combines farm-grown, natural hemp and 100% British wool fillings, ensuring a plush sleeping surface that offers unparalleled levels of comfort and support. These materials are sourced through an exclusive partnership with British Wool, making it possible for customers to trace the wool’s journey from the farm, all the way to the factory before it enters their homes.
With two individual layers of micro pocket springs – 7,000 in total – you can be sure that you’ll drift into a luxurious night’s sleep. The embedded pocket springs are highly flexible, adapting to your body’s contours to relieve pressure while you sleep and providing superior lumbar support.
These are the smallest pocket springs available on the market, and they respond to your individual movement to ensure that you don’t disturb your sleeping partner. The result is a mattress that is both supportive and comfortable, so you wake up each morning feeling rested and refreshed.

Testing out the mattress
As soon as I unwrapped the mattress from its protective packaging the intricate craftsmanship was evident in every stitch.
The Bronte is designed with a soft, luxurious quilted top made from a blend of wool and viscose for a chemical-free sleeping surface and when I lay down on it for the first time I immediately felt as though I was being cradled in a cloud of comfort. The advanced lumbar support aligned seamlessly with my body, and it felt really comfortable right away.
After I’d slept on it for a few nights I began to appreciate what a difference it was having on my well-being. I was no longer waking up feeling stiff and achy and my back pain was beginning to ease.

A sustainable Choice
All of the mattresses in the new Feather & Black collection are 100% recyclable at the end of their life. This means that as well as being a great investment in terms of comfort and support they are also an environmentally conscious choice.
We took advantage of Feather & Black’s recycling service and they collected our old mattress for eco-friendly disposal when the new one was delivered, which made the whole thing really easy and convenient.

Feather and Black Mattress Review – our verdict
The Bronte’s multi-layered construction and amalgamation of superior fillings and advanced spring technology make it an excellent choice for discerning buyers seeking a restorative and luxurious sleep experience. It is expertly crafted, and offers excellent comfort levels, thanks to its deep layers of plush British wool and naturally grown hemp. It also comes with a 7-year guarantee to reassure you of its durability and longevity.
Pros and Cons
Pros: The Bronte mattress offers luxurious comfort with natural, temperature-regulating fillers like wool and hemp. It caters to different firmness preferences and offers advanced lumbar support, with individually responsive micro pocket springs for undisturbed sleep. Handcrafted in the UK, it is an environmentally conscious, recyclable choice.
Cons: Unlike some of the other mattresses in the Feather and Black range, the Bronte doesn’t come with a built-in pillow top layer. If you are after an extra layer of softness and comfort, try the Richmond or the Cawthorn Cashmere, or consider adding a separate mattress topper.
