We invested in several pieces of designer lighting for our old house but when we moved many of them just didn’t really work in our new home and I ended up consigning a few of them to ebay. When you are updating an entire house it’s surprising how many pieces of lighting you actually need. With each room typically needing multiple different light sources – ceiling spotlights, pendant lights and wall lights as well as floor and table lamps – costs can quickly add up.
With most of our budget committed to the renovations, rather than buying expensive lighting I began exploring more budget friendly options, and was pleasantly surprised with what I discovered.
Until quite recently if you were looking for lighting your options were either high street buys, which were cheap but often dull and uninspiring, or high end design classics with a hefty price tag. Over the past few years things have changed though, and as the market has shifted away from lighting showrooms towards the online space, newer online retailers with more trend led offerings have appeared. Designers and manufacturers have also been able to sell their products direct to the customer much more easily, cutting out the middle man and so reducing costs. The established retailers have, in turn, responded with collections that address the customer’s desire for good design at an attainable price point. All of which means there are now more well designed pieces to choose from, whatever your budget.
