The Douglas low arm armchair by British Design Shop

I’m delighted to share my latest photography and styling work for British Design Shop – the new Douglas low arm armchair. I’ve been working with British Design Shop for a few years now and have long admired the understated elegance of the Douglas collection. The latest design, as the name suggests, has lower arms than the original Douglas, which gives it a slightly more relaxed feel.
There’s currently a big shift towards more textured fabrics in upholstery, reflecting a desire for materials that are warm, inviting and comforting, making us feel safe and cocooned. They are perfect for creating minimal spaces with soul, and with that in mind, how gorgeous is this chenille bouclé fabric option? The creamy white hue is unapologetically luxurious and the looped yarn of the bouclé creates visual texture, adding a cosiness and softness.

Designed by Russell Gillott the Douglas is a contemporary design characterised by lozenge shaped cushions. Bespoke black metal legs give the design a lightness and elegance and lumbar support is provided by an angled cushion section concealed behind the back rest cushions, ensuring that it is comfortable as well as stylish.
The low arm version is also available as an armchair (shown here), a two or three seater sofa, and as a loveseat. A footstool (available in two sizes) completes the collection, enabling you to create a chaise effect.

British Design Shop pride themselves on seamlessly blending contemporary design with traditional furniture making skills honed over time. Their design led and beautifully crafted pieces are supplied direct from quality British furniture makers. Offering the highest level of comfort, each hand crafted frame comes with a 10 year structural guarantee. The frame is carefully constructed from kiln-dried hardwood – the process of kiln drying removes all moisture from the wood, enabling it to retain its shape and stability to create a frame that lasts.
In creating your own unique piece you can either select one of ten recommended fabric options or choose from a wider selection of over 90 premium and luxury fabrics. In addition to the chenille bouclé weave option shown here, other fabric options include textural weaves, linen, wool and cotton. Stain guard fabric options are also available if children, heavy usage or pets are a consideration.
New for 2021 is a luxury recycled cotton option, which you can view on the Douglas sofa in the beautiful home of Cate St Hill, who recently collaborated with British Design Shop. The recycled cotton yarns in this new offering originate from the fashion industry and demonstrate that you don’t have to compromise on style when it comes to environmental wellbeing.
The Douglas collection along with other designs in the British Design Shop range can be viewed by appointment at their London studio.
